Love and Relationship: Christian Friendship with the Opposite Sex without Romance

I do believe that guys and girls can have life-enriching, non-romantic friendships in their Christian life.

In fact, it's important that we do. The apostle Paul instructs his spiritual son Timothy to treat younger women as sister, with absolute purity (1 Timothy 5:2). God wants us to be committed with absolutely pure and vibrant relationship.

Paul is reminding us that we are family. Through Christ, we've been adopted by God. "The relationship between Christian brothers and sisters is not something we create", writes Elizabeth Elliott.

"It is already established, we are members of one another; We are related." In this already established relationship, we need to strive for both total purity and friendship.

At another instance Paul tells Timothy what the focuses and purpose of these relationships should be.

"Flee evil desires of youth" he writes, "and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, all along with those who call the lord out of a pure heart” (2 Timothy 2:22).

Paul is telling Timothy to find brothers and sisters in Christ who will call on the lord alongside him. For Paul, Christian friendship has God's glory as it goal.

It's not aimless or merely for the sake of a good time. Paul's primary concern is not that we develop social skill; he wants our friendship to be an exploration of a passionate desire for God and his glory.

The point here is that we need each other to do this. We need be in friendships with members of the opposite sex.

What do brothers-sister relationship would look like? They are characterized by biblical fellowship, affection, and genuine care.

Do you really think that Christians should be in a friendship with the members of the opposite sex?

What do you suggest a Christian brother or sister should do when he/she find out that they are getting romantically involved?
