Body Mass Index: Checking for Obesity

What is Body Mass Index? How can one use it to check for obesity? Today I am sharing with you how to know whether you are obese or not by using a scientific formula known as the Body Mass Index (BMI). Or are you already convinced that you are not  obese?

What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation based on the height and weight of a person. It is the ratio of the body weight of an individual to the height of such individual.

Checking for obesity using BMI.

Body Mass Index is calculated using this formula.

  Body Weight in Kilogram (kg)

Height in Meters square (M2)

The higher the BMI, the more obese you are and the lower the BMI the less obese you are.

Check if you are Obese

To know whether you are obese or not, just take this two simple  steps. Firstly, know your weight in kilogram and put it down. Secondly measure your height in meter square. Divide the value of your weight with that of your height and that will be your BMI.

For example, a young man is 2m tall and weights 88kg. What is his BMI?
The BMI will be:
88

(2)2

= 22 kg/m2 (This is normal body weight).

The Range

The healthy weight range from BMI is 18.5 – 22.9
BMI < 18.5    - You are underweight
18.5 – 22.9      Normal Healthy Weight
23                    Overweight
23  - 29.9         Obese
30                    Severely Obese
